Your website is always a little broken

Almost every small business site has a form that stopped sending, a page that loads slowly on phones, or tracking that broke during the last update. None of it is dramatic, but each problem quietly costs leads. A developer with regular hours finds and fixes them before your customers do.

Safe ways of working

Good developers protect your site as much as they build it. That means a staging copy for testing, backups before every update, separate user accounts and written notes on anything they change. We test documentation habits in the skills test, because the next person to touch your site, or you, should understand what was done.

Build, then maintain

The most useful setup for many businesses is a short burst of build work to fix the backlog, followed by a steady few hours each week for updates, new landing pages and tracking. For work that connects your site to other tools, see our automation specialists.

How we vet for this role

The skills test

The skills test is a small build on your platform: turn a one-page design into a responsive landing page, connect its form, and pass a mobile speed check, with a short note explaining choices. We review the code or setup, the mobile layout and how clearly they document the work.

It is one of eight checks, alongside a portfolio review, a past employment check, a live English interview, a paid trial task, a background check and an NDA. You interview the shortlist at the end.

Getting started

What the first 30 days look like

  1. Week 1

Access through separate user accounts, a staging site set up, and an audit of speed, broken links and tracking.

  2. Week 2

The most urgent fixes go live. Backups and an update routine are in place.

  3. Week 3

New pages or landing pages built from your backlog, tested on staging first.

  4. Week 4

Review speed and conversion tracking against the week-one audit and plan the next month.

FAQ

Questions about hiring a web developer

Which platforms do your web developers work with?

WordPress, Webflow, Shopify and Wix cover most small business sites, and some developers also build with frameworks like Astro and Next.js. We scout for experience on your platform.

How do I give a developer access safely?

Create a separate user account for them with only the permissions they need, and never share your own login. Use a staging site for changes and keep regular backups.

Do I need a full-time developer?

Often not. Many businesses need a burst of build work followed by a few hours a week of maintenance. We scope the hours on the discovery call.

Can the developer also handle SEO?

They'll handle the technical side, like speed, structure and indexing. Keyword research and content strategy are an SEO specialist's job, and the two roles work well together.
